Recently we hosted our first ever ‘NetZero for Young People’ training course in collaboration with City of Portsmouth College

We welcomed young people from three secondary schools in Portsmouth to join us at our Changemaker Studios: Portsmouth space for an exhilarating day of engaging activities, green workshops, inspirational guest speakers and learning about the myriad of career opportunities in the ‘green’ sector.

In 2019 there was a dramatic change in the minds of the public, and most notably in young people. More than ever the issue of global warming and climate change came to the forefront of the world.

That summer there were protests across the planet, with social activists such as Greta Thunberg leading the charge for millions of young people to strike from school to protest what was being done to our planet, and in some places entire cities’ ground to a halt.

.

Protests erupted around the planet, with young people at the forefront to defend the future of their world

Finally, after many years of campaigning and warnings, the public at large began to take the issue of climate change seriously. Around the globe nations began to announce targets to reduce their carbon output, with many prioritising reaching ‘Net Zero’ – the most common benchmark in reducing global emissions.

Net zero means to actively contribute nothing to global warming. This equate to emitting no greenhouse gases such as those released when burning fossil fuels, and ensuring that the total greenhouse gas emissions in our air never increases.

To achieve this is a two pronged approach, meaning we have to reduce our current emissions, whilst removing the current carbon in the atmosphere.

.

Carbon emissions from fossil fuels are creating irreparable damage to the environment and escalating climate change

.

The UN’s Global Goal 13 identifies the climate crisis as an urgent threat to civilisation. If we continue on our current trajectory, global temperatures will soar and cause irreversible ecological catastrophe. Already some countries are suffering wild fires spread across many miles each summer, and in others the heat would make the land inhospitable to live upon.

To avoid this ecological disaster we as a race must radically reduce our carbon emissions and focus our efforts on hitting Net Zero. The reason for this project is to inform and empower young people to be pro-active changemakers in society, taking the message of Net Zero forward and supporting each other to achieve it.

.

Unloc Facilitator Tom speaks to the young people during the event

.

To kick off the day we explored the term ‘NetZero’ with our young changemakers, and discussed how it relates to us personally as citizens within our own area. The young people then had the opportunity to learn about retro-fitting and the college courses taking place at the North Harbour campus to train in this field in order to meet the growing city wide and national needs.

.

.

Following this, we were delighted to be joined by three industry professionals for a Question and Answer session with the pupils, they were:

After a networking lunch of pizza, the young people took part in the WWF carbon footprint calculator, this resulted in some fantastic in-depth and thoughtful conversations around what they can do as individuals to help reduce emissions, and what that impact means.

.

.

After this debate we then moved on to creating a short presentation to detail what the students would like to do within their own school communities to support the ‘NetZero’ agenda and become innovative changemakers. The young people were asked to come up with ideas of their own with which to present to their peers.

.

Portsmouth City Council’s Cabinet Member for Children, Families & Education, Cllr Suzy Horton speaks to the young people

Each school group presented their ideas back to Maria Vetrone from the City of Portsmouth College senior leadership team and Cllr Suzy Horton, Portsmouth City Council’s Cabinet Member for Children, Families and Education.

There was such a fantastic energy in the room, and the breadth of the ideas put forward was simply brilliant. It was so obvious to all of us how seriously the young people have taken the task and just how much thought and passion they’d invested into their ideas. We were so impressed with all of them.

.

Anna Miles MBE, a Teacher at Mayville High School said:

“I want to say the biggest thank you to you and everyone who made today happen. I had a couple of pupils with me that really needed a confident boost and they all left beaming. They absolutely loved today!”

Unloc’s Managing Director Hayden Taylor

Unloc’s Managing Director Hayden Taylor said:

“Programmes like this aren’t just important to the knowledge and experience of young people, they’re integral to the very survival of our planet and the future of all species on it. It’s vital that today’s young generation have a clear understanding of the global issues we face, and just how we’ve reached such a critically dangerous point in our ecological situation in the first place”.

“It’s these young people that will inherit the world, and the myriad of problems created by previous generations. We have to ensure we prepare them with the knowledge, the tools, and the passion to take on this challenge and face it head on.”

City of Portsmouth College’s Chief Operating Officer Maria Vetrone

.

Maria Vetrone, City of Portsmouth College Chief Operating Officer, said:

“At City of Portsmouth College, we recognise the importance of net zero training for all. Only through awareness of the issues facing our beautiful planet and the steps we all need to take to reverse the already frightening results of climate change can we really start to turn the tide.”

It was very encouraging and a privilege to spend time with all the bright and engaged brilliant young people here today. I hope that we can keep running these events for Portsmouth and the region and I look forward to seeing more of our fabulous young people attend and benefit.”

.

.

City of Portsmouth College – NetZero Project Manager Toby Cartledge said:

“It was great to see the young people of Portsmouth and surrounding area embrace the training on Net Zero and sustainability. COPC have worked hard over the past year to build their own Net Zero training hub and retrofit property and we look forward to our future workforce passing through our college.

“A big shout out must go to Unloc for hosting the event and ensuring a wonderful experience for all, and also a special thanks to the school attendees and their teachers for making the training day a memorable experience!”

Nick Cotter from Cotter Agritech has won £10,000 funding and a business mentor package

Nick Cotter of Cotter Agritech has been crowned the winner of the 2021 Verizon/Unloc Young Entrepreneurs Challenge. The company specialises in a patented hardware/software solution designed to reduce chemical use in agriculture whilst also improving productivity and profitability.

Nick fought off strong competition from across Europe yesterday, Tuesday 1st March, to win £10,000 of funding plus a business mentor package, and entry to the One Young World 2022 Global Summit in Manchester.

The five remaining finalists pitched their business concepts to a panel of expert judges and guests, representing members of both the business and education sectors during the Grand Final which was held virtually online.

“Pitching is always such a nerve wracking experience, you can never escape that, it doesn’t get any easier, but the key is to be confident. No one can tell your story like you can,” said Nick “Getting shortlisted was a huge honour, especially as the competition is across the whole of Europe.”

“The exceptional calibre of the other finalists was a huge challenge, and it’s a huge privilege to be announced the winner. I couldn’t be happier!”

The four Young Entrepreneurs Challenge runners up will also each receive £1,000 of funding to invest in their start up business.

The runners up are as follows:

“This annual challenge continues to go from strength to strength, attracting amazing talent and innovative business concepts from across Europe,” said Scott Lawrence, Group Vice President of Verizon Business in EMEA. I’d like to congratulate Nick for his amazing business concept and say many thanks to all of this year’s finalists for taking part. I cannot wait to see our young entrepreneurs flourish in their careers.”

“Congratulations to our Grand Prize Winner Nick Cotter for a truly deserved win,” said Hayden Taylor, Managing Director of Unloc.

The energy in our Changemaker Studios: Portsmouth space was electric recently as students from schools across Portsmouth gathered together for our second Council of Portsmouth Students Summit 2021/2022.

This in-person event is a great chance for the participating students to mix and get to know their peers from other schools in the area, as well as developing their skills and working within their Action Groups to bring about change in their school and community.

This year the Summit included representatives from 11 institutions including Admiral Lord Nelson School, Castle View Academy, Charter Academy, Mayville High School, Miltoncross Academy, Park Community School, Portsmouth Grammar School, Priory School, St John’s College, Trafalgar School, and The Portsmouth Academy.

The day included icebreakers, energisers and activities led by the students themselves, with the rest of the day tailored to the students’ thoughts, opinions, input and feedback.

Our Unloc Programme Facilitator Jessi, and the facilitator of this year’s CoPS, delivered a ‘masterclass’ on Confidence and Public Speaking. We considered what ‘confidence’ means to us, why confidence is necessary, and introduced the ‘Three-Legged Stool of Self-Confidence’, discussing how each leg representing Skillful, Responsible and Appreciation needs to be balanced.

We focused a little more on the Appreciation topic, and why, as British people, we tend to find it hard to accept appreciation and to say ‘thank you’. Whether we’re embarassed, don’t believe the compliment, or don’t know how to respond, Jessi encouraged everyone to share compliments with the members of their group, and asked the received to show their gratitude with a “thanks!”.

We dived into Public Speaking, considering the different styles, famous public speakers, and the positives (and negatives) of their style of communicating. Jessi challenged everyone to give public speaking a go in the form of ‘Just A Minute’ – speaking continuously for one minute without hesitation, deviation, or repetition on a subject of their choice!

Our first Guest Speaker of the day was Fungayi Zinyemba, the Manager of the Mental Health Support Team in Portsmouth, who discussed how MHST are working with their schools to provide help and support with the mental health and wellbeing of themselves and their peers.

It was great to see the students asking questions and starting conversations about mental health, whether that be their own, their friends, or general concern for how mental health is treated in schools and their communities.

Fellow Unloc Facilitator Larissa led an Activity on Debating, where the fundamentals of debate were covered before the students participated in a ‘moving debate’, using the space to show their opinion on hot topics. The students got stuck in, sharing their thoughts on the matter, with many of them utilising the public speaking skills we had covered earlier in the day, confidently sharing with everyone in the room.

Our second Guest Speaker of the day was Lauren, a former CoPS Student from Portsmouth High School who was involved in the forum last academic year. Lauren was invited to speak to this year’s cohort about her personal experience whilst in CoPS and the actions and changes her group were able to bring about in her school and community.

After Lauren’s inspiring talk, we split off into our Action Groups! These represented key themes or current issues, these were:

The students were given time to share their priorities going forward, led by the Action Group Leaders. Each group then presented to everyone else.

It’s amazing to know the actions these young people have already been able to implement, as well as their plans for the near-future to continue to bring about change in their school and community!

It was a truly inspiring event, and wonderful to see so many young changemakers from across Portsmouth gathered together and sharing their ideas in our new Changemaker Studios: Portsmouth space!

We can’t wait to see our CoPS members at the next Summit!

The Verizon/Unloc Young Entrepreneurs Challenge, our annual online tech-entrepreneurship competition for young people across Europe, has chosen the five finalists who will compete for the competition’s £10,000/€11,000* Grand Prize!

The package also includes funding, mentorship and a technology package as well as entry to this year’s One Young World 2022 Tokyo Summit in Japan (16-19 May 2022).

The finalists will pitch their ideas live to a panel of expert judges in the Grand Final to be held virtually on March 1, 2022.

We are excited to reveal our five finalists are:

The Verizon/Unloc Young Enterprise Challenge aims to encourage and attract the young business leaders of tomorrow. The competition challenges young people to consider the worlds of technology, health, the environment and sustainability, and to put forward their tech-led business idea to enrich and benefit the lives of other people.

“This challenge continues to attract amazing young talent from across Europe and this year is no exception,” comments Scott Lawrence, Group Vice President of Verizon Business in Europe. “The innovative business concepts submitted cover a diverse range of industries and topics. It is crucial that we continue to support and nurture these budding entrepreneurs, as they will be the successful business leaders of tomorrow.  We’re looking forward to the grand final and can’t wait to witness the ideas in action.”

“Each year we see more applicants from across Europe, and stronger and more focused business ideas from the young people that apply.” said Hayden Taylor, Managing Director of Unloc. “The engagement we’ve had from colleges, universities and organizations this year has been nothing short of spectacular, and it’s allowed us to engage with young people directly, really giving them the support and confidence to apply. The quality of applications this year is so high, it really is going to be tough for the judges to choose a winner from our amazing finalists.”

In addition to the grand prize for the main winner, the remaining four finalists will each receive £1,000 of funding, as well as a one-to-one development plan and a series of flagship masterclasses to give their businesses the best possible start.

Note: The Grand Prize fund will depend on the exchange rate at the time of the final.
