On Monday 16 November we were delighted to launch our new Student Governor Hub, a dedicated online space for Student Governors which provides support, advice, training, and knowledge all located in one free to access online portal.
The project has been many months of hard work for us here at Unloc and has been sponsored by the Association of Colleges and supported by The Blagrave Trust. This continued support has allowed us to train, inform, and raise the profile of student governors across the country, empowering them through our digital tools and workshops to be effective young changemakers and policy influencers.
Often, young people can be unprepared for taking on the role of a Student Governor, or have been elected into the position by their peers, with little experience or understanding of how to take on the challenge. This can be a scary and isolating time for them, especially during the current pandemic conditions where young people may be isolated at home, or unable to meet with others in person to talk through their concerns.
To ensure young people are getting the help they need, The Festival of Student Governance event was held earlier this month, which included a range of online training sessions, discussions and guest speakers, allowing young people to meet with other Student Governors digitally, and learn from their experience.
Our new Student Governor Hub builds upon this and contains a wealth of resources designed to support not just students, but their colleges also, helping both to take an active role in developing young people into Student Governors.
Our E-Course is a 6 session e-learning programme which provides all the skills and knowledge young people require to be an effective Student Governor, all accessible right from their computer or device.
Then there’s our Resource Bank which features a broad range of resources to help young people develop themselves as Student Governors, as well as for colleges also, to help them support their students and develop their skills.
The Hub also has access to our Live Workshops , these online digital workshop sessions provide a fun and informative way to engage with young people directly, providing sound advice and supporting them with the knowledge and experience they require to be effective in their role. They’ll also be able to access and watch recordings of the Festival of Student Governance event.
Our aim is to raise the profile of student governors nationwide, connecting young leaders with each other through our programmes and resources to create a powerful network of young change makers.
“We’re immensely proud to finally reveal the Student Governors Hub to everyone” said Unloc Managing Director Hayden Taylor, “Thanks to the ongoing support of the Association of Colleges, and The Blagrave Trust we’ve been able to build and develop such a wonderful resource for young people across the UK. Not just a tool to read or watch, but programmes and workshops to actively engage with. Using sound experience from previous and current Student Governors we hope this valuable resource will help shape and develop young leaders for the future.”
