On Thursday, 30th June, the Unloc Enterprise team were up bright and early to head over to the Isle of Wight to kickstart the first of two Enterprise days which would enable students to be in with a chance of winning a £500 cheque to start up their own social venture.
The challenge was designed to encourage students to think about enterprise and to generate ideas for a social business whilst learning the skills necessary to succeed.
How did the days plan out?
The days started of with a brief introduction to the team and what a social enterprise was. It was then followed by our MD, Hayden Taylor, and his story on his previous social activities and gains. Shortly after, the students broke off into separate classes to take part in a series of workshops, offering them the basic skills needed to get started up in the business world.
The workshops covered three main areas: pitching, branding and a businesses vision. During these workshops, students not only learned new skills, they were able to realise that starting a business and portraying an idea was a lot easier than they had expected.
After the workshops had finished, the students were briefed on the task for the afternoon. This consisted of finalising their business idea in groups, identifying their mission statement, working with a graphic designer to create their branding and logo and finally rehearsing the all important pitch.
After a couple of hours, students were ready to pitch their ideas in a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style environment in front of our panel and their peers. The ideas were creative, innovative and very impressive. The students demonstrated use of the skills they had learned during their workshop sessions and all teams that participated did an amazing job – although there was only one winner on each of the days, many other students were still interested in taking their idea further.
The Unloc Enterprise Days are a great idea for students to get involved in the world of business and learn a host of new skills. The days run from early morning until afternoon and give students the chance to run through all the steps needed to run a business. You can find out more about them here: Unloc Enterprise Website
