This week we’re starting a 10 week blogging series about the ways in which we believe you can make student voice an exciting experience in school. Each week we will be writing a new blog post from our list of thoughts, which can be seen here.
This week’s topic is all about making sure everyone has the opportunity to get involved and this is how we believe it can happen.
The right opportunity
Student Voice is all about students having the opportunity and the freedom to speak out about their learning/school environment. However, this opportunity must be able to lead to change within the school environment. When students have this freedom and the understanding that their voice can make a difference, students are made contributors to the learning.
Invite students from all areas of the school
Student Voice is most effective when students have the growth mindset and drive to create change. However, change makers come in all shapes and sizes and so it is important that students in all areas of the school environment are given the chance to contribute. All students are capable of developing the skills necessary to bring about change, and so all students must be given the opportunity to speak out.
Creating the right atmosphere
Broadcasting the changes former students have made to their education is a great way of inviting current students to use their student voice too. Creating the environment that celebrates change and treats students as ‘policy makers’ is a wonderful way of making sure student voice continues and is valued.
Next week we’ll be sharing our thoughts around how we can encourage students to share ideas and opinions with each other. Watch this space!
